Experience Ancient Roman School Life at Butser Ancient Farm This Summer

26th Jul 2023, Hampshire (VSNewsNetwork.com) - Butser Ancient Farm, located in Hampshire, is set to offer a unique glimpse into the life of schoolchildren 2000 years ago. As part of this summer's activities, the farm will host the Reading Ancient Schoolroom Project from the University of Reading in their recreated Roman Villa.

The immersive event will take place from Tuesday, 1st August to Monday, 7th August. During this period, visitors can enjoy writing on wax tablets, exploring ancient Latin curses, listening to Roman fables, and much more.

These drop-in workshops are included in the regular admission prices. Families are encouraged to delve into the ancient education system, experience a myriad of fun and educational activities, and learn about life in a Roman school. The farm will even host a resident Roman witch offering curses, but attendees are urged to use these responsibly!

Professor Eleanor Dickey FBA, the founder and director of the Ancient Schoolroom project, expressed her excitement about bringing the experience to Butser Ancient Farm for the first time this summer. She noted, "Butser Ancient Farm, as a centre for education, is the perfect location to bring our immersive fun and educational experience to life and share the fascinating way children were taught in the ancient world."

Rachel Bingham, Creative Developer at Butser Ancient Farm, echoed this enthusiasm, stating, "We're excited to welcome the team from Reading University to our villa for the week to share more about what life was like as an ancient school child."

The Ancient Schoolroom project is based on comprehensive research by the University of Reading's academics. The research includes original Latin texts and archaeological finds that paint a vivid picture of Roman schooling. The setting chosen for the school is soon after the Roman conquest of Britain, when Roman general Agricola ordered the establishment of Roman schools to help sway the native nobles towards Roman rule.

Visitors will have the chance to purchase Roman replica items such as papyrus, wax tablets, and ink from the schoolroom to take home.

Butser Ancient Farm will be open seven days a week during the summer holidays until the 3rd September, with the Ancient Schoolroom experience running from the 1st to the 7th August.
