OAKLAND, Calif., June 14, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) – Hella Creative, in collaboration with Last Supper Society and the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA), will host the Hella Juneteenth “The Cookout” on June 19. The event, supported by Visit Oakland, Maker's Mark, and ButcherBox, will take place in the OMCA Garden and aims to celebrate Juneteenth with a focus on Black food and artistry.

In 2020, Hella Creative launched a campaign that played a crucial role in making Juneteenth a nationally recognized holiday. The collective's efforts included creating an informative website and advocating for corporate acknowledgment, which resulted in over 805 companies committing to observe Juneteenth as a paid holiday. This year's celebration at the OMCA Garden seeks to honor this achievement and highlight the cultural importance of cookouts in the Black American community, which serve as vital spaces for community, cuisine, and celebration.

The event will feature contributions from some of the Bay Area's favorite Black chefs and Black-owned restaurants. A special Cookout Plate will be prepared by chefs such as Michele McQueen of Town Fare, Byron Hughes of Last Supper Society, and others from establishments including Sobre Mesa and Smokin' Woods. The Cookout Plate, coordinated by Last Supper Society and Town Fare, will offer classic and popular dishes reflecting the essence of backyard gatherings.

Hella Juneteenth promises a day of family-friendly activities and entertainment. Attendees can enjoy music from DJs Fat Tony, DJ Kenzo, and DJ Darling Cool, who will play a mix of cookout classics. The event will also include a spades tournament organized by UPLFTRS, a collective line dance led by choreographer Yeni Lucero, wine tasting curated by Black Vines, an art installation by Creative Shields, and various lawn games.

The event aims to celebrate freedom, community, and culture in a festive atmosphere. More details about Hella Juneteenth “The Cookout” can be found at hellajuneteenth.com.
