BELLEVUE, Wash., April 5, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - Overlake Medical Center & Clinics has implemented an artificial intelligence (AI) tool, Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX™) Copilot, to enhance patient-provider interactions and improve productivity by automating the process of taking and summarizing notes during patient visits. This initiative allows healthcare providers to dedicate more time to patient care rather than administrative tasks.

DAX™ Copilot, a product from Microsoft, utilizes conversational, ambient, and generative AI technologies to draft clinical notes automatically and securely for review and completion post-patient visit. The software operates in real-time during patient-provider conversations, integrating directly into Epic, Overlake's electronic health record system, thereby reducing the administrative workload commonly undertaken by providers outside of clinic hours.

Christy Chan, MD, an Overlake Clinics family medicine physician, highlighted the positive impact of DAX™ Copilot, stating, "The psychological benefits have been the best part of this application. The burden of having to remember all the details and urgency of closing notes is significantly removed." This sentiment reflects the broader potential of DAX™ Copilot to enhance operational efficiency, improve patient experiences, and support provider satisfaction and retention by mitigating burnout.

A nationwide survey among 1,000 clinicians using DAX technology revealed significant time savings and psychological benefits. Clinicians reported saving an average of 7 minutes per patient encounter on note-taking, with 79% experiencing a better work-life balance and 70% noting a reduction in feelings of burnout and fatigue.

DAX Copilot is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4 model and leverages Microsoft Azure cloud's capabilities, ensuring compliance with the Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST®) certification and federal privacy regulations. The technology aims to enhance documentation accuracy and reduce the potential for human error.

Scott Waters, Overlake’s chief information and technology officer, emphasized the importance of patient safety and privacy in adopting new technologies, stating, "Our patients’ safety and privacy are our highest priorities and are factors in every decision we make about technological advancements. It is a sacred honor to be trusted with our patients’ care, and we are pleased to offer this exciting, new tool that will elevate their experience."

Overlake plans to expand the use of DAX Copilot technology across at least five clinics by mid-May.
