The Associated Press and OpenAI Partner to Explore Generative AI in News Products and Services

July 13, 2023, (VSNewsNetwork.com) - The Associated Press (AP) and OpenAI have announced a collaboration in which they will share access to select news content and technology, focusing on potential applications of generative AI in news products and services. OpenAI will license part of AP’s text archive, and AP will leverage OpenAI's technology and product expertise.

“Generative AI is a fast-moving space with tremendous implications for the news industry. We are pleased that OpenAI recognizes that fact-based, nonpartisan news content is essential to this evolving technology, and that they respect the value of our intellectual property,” said Kristin Heitmann, AP's senior vice president and chief revenue officer. Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer at OpenAI, also noted the collaboration's importance: “OpenAI is committed to supporting the vital work of journalism, and we’re eager to learn from The Associated Press as they delve into how our AI models can have a positive impact on the news industry.”

The partnership builds on AP's nearly decade-long efforts to use automation to enhance its journalism and assist local news outlets in integrating technology. While the organization examines standards around generative AI, it does not currently use it in its news stories. The collaboration aims to explore responsible creation and usage of AI systems, potentially benefiting journalism at large. The Associated Press has been employing AI technology since 2014, notably in automating corporate earnings reports and sporting event summaries, as well as in transcription services.
