ELKHART, Ind., February 16, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - ITR Concession Co. LLC (ITRCC), the entity responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Indiana Toll Road, has announced the completion of a significant solar energy project, dubbed Project Soleil, across 14 locations on the Toll Road. This initiative, in partnership with Solscient Energy, a Toledo, Ohio-based provider of comprehensive solar energy solutions, aims to supply over a third of the Toll Road's electricity requirements through solar power, anticipating a reduction in annual carbon emissions by around 900 metric tons.

In a move towards environmental stewardship, ITRCC had previously set ambitious targets in October 2021 to cut scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 50% by 2030, with a long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. These objectives are in line with the Science Based Targets initiative and the broader commitments of the Paris Agreement, which seeks to combat climate change on a global scale. Project Soleil represents ITRCC's most substantial effort to date towards fulfilling these environmental commitments.

Granger Souder, Co-founder of Solscient Energy, praised ITRCC's dedication to renewable energy, stating, “What comes across loud and clear through our work with ITRCC over the past year is how seriously they are taking their own role in the energy transition. Their embrace of critical steps to move toward renewables in their operations sets an example for others across the country to replicate.”

The solar arrays installed at each of the 14 sites are designed to meet 100% of the energy needs of each location, including maintenance barns and toll plazas. Collectively, the installations are expected to generate nearly 2,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity annually. Surplus energy produced by the solar panels, beyond the needs of ITRCC facilities, will be distributed back to the local grid, contributing to the power supply of nearby communities.

Alyssa Staley, an executive at ITRCC, reflected on the broader implications of the project, saying, “I believe our commitment to sustainability isn't just about reducing our carbon footprint; it's for a cleaner future for generations to come. Together, we're not just powering our operations; we're illuminating a path towards a more sustainable tomorrow.”
