COLLEGEVILLE, Minn., September 25, 2023 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University (CSB and SJU) witnessed a historic milestone on September 22 as they officially inaugurated Brian J. Bruess, Ph.D., as the joint president of both institutions. This is the first time in the over 100-year history of both colleges that they have had a shared president. Furthermore, Bruess has become the first individual nationally to simultaneously head two distinct four-year colleges.

The inauguration was marked by ceremonies at both institutions, beginning with a Mass at the Sacred Heart Chapel at Saint Ben’s and culminating in an inauguration ceremony at the Abbey and University Church at Saint John’s. The events saw participation from students, faculty, alumni, and supporters.

A notable shift in governance, termed the "Strong Integration" model, is on the horizon for CSB and SJU. Despite the schools' joint curriculum, they have traditionally functioned under separate governance systems. This new model is designed to closely align the operations of both schools, leading to unified strategies and swift decision-making.

Commenting on the development, Bruess said, “Our Strong Integration model celebrates our unity and what makes our schools unique. The student experience remains at the heart of our endeavors, ensuring a robust future for both Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s.”

Before his role at CSB and SJU, Bruess held the presidential post at St. Norbert College in Wisconsin and undertook various roles over a 21-year period at St. Catherine University in Minnesota.

LeAnne Stewart ’87, chair of the CSB and SJU Boards of Trustees, remarked on the significance of the inauguration, emphasizing it as a celebration of the joint potential of both institutions.
