Amberley Weir, the Assistant Director at St. Mark Early Enrichment Program, highlighted the necessity of the project, stating, “We had to close a big portion of our playground because our old chain link fence was in such bad condition.” The preschool's need for a safe playground was crucial, especially due to the previous fence's failure to meet local codes in Knoxville.

Derek Smith, Chief Operating Officer of Rio Grande Fence Co., explained the company's decision to assist the preschool. "After reading St. Mark's submission and speaking with Amberley about the state of their playground fence causing it to be closed, we felt compelled to select them for our first service project in Knoxville," he said. This decision was part of the company's broader initiative to engage with and support the Knoxville community.

The installation by Rio Grande Fence Co. included removing the damaged chain link fence and replacing it with a 5-foot high Ameristar Montage Plus ornamental steel fence system. The project also involved adding advanced safety features to the playground's walk gates, such as Locinox Mammoth-180 self-closing hinges and a D&D Technologies MagnaLatch magnetic gate latch.

Weir expressed gratitude for the new fence, noting its impact, "The new fence is going to allow us to open our playground back up and it's going to give us a safe place for our kids to play on every single day." The installation not only resolves safety concerns but also enhances the overall functionality and appeal of the playground.

Smith also commented on the significance of this project for Rio Grande Fence Co. as they establish their presence in Knoxville. "We're excited about opening our Knoxville branch office, and we thought this was the perfect way to introduce ourselves to the Knoxville community, by serving this great community and local non-profit by sharing what we are best at," he said.
