CAMDEN, N.J., April 4, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - The Housing Authority of the City of Camden (HACC), The Michaels Organization, and the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (NJHMFA) celebrated the opening of The Harrison, a new senior housing development in Camden's Cramer Hill neighborhood. This event marks the completion of the second phase in the $165 million redevelopment of Ablett Village, Camden’s oldest public housing community.

The Harrison, a $16.3 million development, offers 55 mixed-income senior apartments equipped with numerous amenities, including medical exam rooms, a multipurpose room, craft lounge, healing garden, fitness center, and more. The development aims to address the housing needs of seniors, with five units reserved for those facing homelessness, two units at unrestricted market rates, and the remainder for seniors at or below 80% of the Area Median Income.

Camden Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen remarked on the collaborative effort behind the project, stating, “The Harrison and other reimaginings of Ablett Village represent what Camden can accomplish when we come together as a team.” Congressman Donald Norcross also highlighted the federal support for the redevelopment, mentioning, “I was proud to work alongside the community to advocate for the federal Choice grant funding to redevelop Ablett Village.”

The project received significant financial support, including a $35 million Choice Neighborhoods Implementation grant from HUD in 2021 and $13.9 million in tax credit equity from NJHMFA through federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits.

Nicholas Cangelosi, Senior Vice President of Development at The Michaels Organization, expressed gratitude to the project's partners, saying, “Michaels is honored to have been entrusted with building yet another beautifully equipped, energy-efficient, and affordable community for Camden’s older adults.”

Melody Johnson-Williams, Executive Director of HACC, shared her satisfaction with the project's progress, emphasizing the community's support and the anticipated impact of The Harrison on its residents.

The redevelopment of Ablett Village continues with plans for the third and fourth phases, which will include 297 new homes, expected to begin in Summer 2024.
