Ananda Devi Named 28th Laureate of Prestigious Neustadt International Prize for Literature
NORMAN, Okla., October 24, 2023 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - Ananda Devi has been named the 28th laureate of the prestigious Neustadt International Prize for Literature, announced World Literature Today, the University of Oklahoma’s international literature and culture magazine. Known as the "American Nobel," the Neustadt Prize is awarded biennially and honors significant contributions to world literature.
Born in Mauritius, Ananda Devi is an influential figure in the Francophone literary world. She has penned over 25 books, encompassing novels, poetry collections, short stories, and essays. Her works have been translated into multiple languages and she has been the recipient of several major awards, including the title of Officier des Arts et des Lettres from France. “It is long overdue for Ananda Devi to receive an international honor of this magnitude. She is deserving, and I hope that this honor will be a springboard to more recognition for her amazing work,” said Robert Con Davis-Undiano, executive director of World Literature Today.
The nomination for the award came from Fabienne Kanor, an award-winning writer and filmmaker. The Neustadt Prize is unique in its international scope and is one of the few literary awards that is open to poets, novelists, and playwrights alike. The award comes with a $50,000 cash prize, a silver cast of an eagle feather, and a certificate.
