LOS ANGELES, July 2, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - Jory Herman, a double bassist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, has announced the release of his new album, "Argonautical," on July 10, 2024. The album features five works by female composers, performed by Herman and pianist Marina Pacowski.

The album includes two world-premiere commissions and two new arrangements for the double bass. Herman commissioned composers Jordan Jinosko and Mieke Doezema to create new pieces, and also arranged works by Rachel Portman and Amy Beach. The album also features a piece by Mason Bynes, titled "Hades," composed for the Bass Players for Black Composers organization.

The album's title piece, "Argonauta" by Jordan Jinosko, is inspired by nautical adventurers and a specific genus of octopuses. Other notable pieces include "Gecko" by Mieke Doezema, inspired by the reptiles of Hawai’i, "Romance" by Amy Beach, and "Recollection" by Rachel Portman, originally written for cello and piano but transcribed by Herman for double bass.

The project is supported by the Harmon Lewis Memorial Collaborative Keyboard Artist Award from the International Society of Bassists and the Community Arts Grant from the City of Burbank.

"Argonautical" will be available on major streaming platforms including YouTube, BandCamp, Spotify, and Apple Music. To celebrate the release, Herman will perform recitals in the Los Angeles area in September:

  • Sept. 15, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Salit Conservatory of Music in Burbank, CA, with an introduction by Emily Barth Isler, author of "The Color of Sound"

  • Sept. 19, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at Shigemi Matsumoto Recital Hall at California State University in Northridge
