SAN DIEGO, August 27, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - The Owners' Counsel of America (OCA), a national association of eminent domain attorneys, has awarded the 2024 Toby Prince Brigham OCA Scholarship to Kenneth Landers, a second-year law student at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. The scholarship, named in honor of OCA's late founder Toby Prince Brigham, is awarded annually to one law student who demonstrates a commitment to property rights and the principles of just compensation.

The Toby Prince Brigham OCA Scholarship provides the recipient with the opportunity to attend the ALI-CLE Eminent Domain and Land Valuation Litigation Conference, a notable event in the field of property rights law. The conference, which has been held for over 40 years, features both basic and advanced topics in eminent domain law, offering attendees the chance to learn from and network with top practitioners in the field.

Kenneth Landers, the 2024 recipient, serves as the Tenth Circuit Articles Editor with the Denver Law Review and as Treasurer of the Denver Student Chapter of the Federalist Society. He has also worked as a Research Assistant to Professor Jan Laitos, a recognized authority on property rights and the U.S. Constitution. Landers has interned with the Pacific Legal Foundation, a public interest law firm focusing on property issues, and previously served as deputy policy director for the minority caucus in the Colorado State Senate.

Reflecting on his experience at the 2023 ALI-CLE Conference in New Orleans, Landers stated, "It has been really eye-opening to see what practitioners are actually doing in the real world, versus what goes on in the case books and lecture halls of law school. It’s been a study, for me, in what it means to be an effective advocate for property owners."

The OCA scholarship is designed to inspire the next generation of lawyers to advocate for property rights, a cause that was central to Toby Prince Brigham’s career. Previous scholarship recipients have reported that attending the conference provided valuable networking opportunities that helped them secure positions at respected law firms.

Applications for the 2025 Toby Prince Brigham OCA Scholarship, which will allow the recipient to attend the conference in San Diego from January 30 to February 1, are due by October 1, 2024. Interested applicants can contact OCA at info@ownerscounsel.com for more information.
