Treebones Resort Celebrates 20 Years of Eco-Tourism and Glamping in Big Sur
BIG SUR, Calif., March 19, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - Treebones Resort, a glamping destination located in Big Sur, Califrnia, is observing its 20th anniversary. The resort is known for offering unique accommodations in yurts that blend seamlessly with the natural environment along the Pacific Ocean's edge.
The resort's development began in the early 1980s after the land, locally referred to as Treebones, was rezoned to "Visitor Serving Commercial" as part of a collaborative effort with Monterey County to establish a Land Use Plan for Big Sur. Founders John and Corinne Handy, alongside their family, embarked on creating a resort that emphasizes rustic elegance and environmental harmony, officially opening in November 2004.
Reflecting on the resort's ethos, Corinne Handy stated, “We wanted to create an experience where guests would enjoy nature, refresh themselves and stay simply but comfortably.” According to a company press release, the design of the yurts, inspired by the natural forms of animal nests and equipped with clear sky domes, is intended to provide guests with a comfortable means to immerse themselves in the surrounding natural beauty.
John Handy commented on the conceptualization of Treebones Resort, noting, “At that time, the word ‘glamping’ did not exist. In our first brochure, we tried to explain what it might be like to sleep in a tent structure on the edge of the continent.” Today, the resort has expanded its amenities to include dining options, massage services, and daily yoga, attracting a global clientele.
The resort is fully off-grid and has implemented various sustainable practices, including providing subsidized housing for its 30 employees. John Handy elaborated on their commitment to sustainability, “Our family built Treebones guided by our own personal mantra of eco-consciousness, using recycled materials where we could. We have learned and employed many ways to use the least amount of energy as effectively as possible.”
To commemorate its 20th anniversary, Treebones Resort has planned a live outdoor music concert on October 19, 2024, welcoming both the local community and visitors.
The Handys also addressed the challenges of operating in Big Sur, particularly the economic and environmental impacts of highway closures. Corinne Handy discussed the dual nature of tourism in the area, “Big Sur is the epicenter of so much – it has many double-sided coin issues that are always discussed here... We need those who visit this special coastline to tread lightly and care as deeply as those who live here do.”
