SAN DIEGO, December 19, 2023 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - According to General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), the Government of Canada has finalized a purchase agreement for the MQ-9B SkyGuardian® Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). The contract includes associated Certified Ground Control Stations and support equipment, with the first delivery expected in 2028.

The MQ-9B SkyGuardian RPAS is designed for interoperability with Canada’s domestic missions and its continental defense missions through NORAD, as well as with key international allies, including the Five Eyes Alliance (FVEY) and NATO. This capability allows for seamless integration with Canada's existing and future defense, civil air, and ground assets.

Linden Blue, CEO of GA-ASI, emphasized the suitability of the MQ-9B SkyGuardian for Canada's diverse operational needs. “Canada’s vast territory and complex terrains, including in the Arctic, require a cost-effective multi-mission RPAS solution that can endure long periods on station, fly in harsh weather environments, and safely operate in all airspaces,” said Blue. “MQ-9B SkyGuardian delivers those critical capabilities. GA-ASI and Team SkyGuardian Canada are honored by this opportunity to become a key partner to Canada for the very long term in delivering these no-fail defense and security outcomes.”

Team SkyGuardian Canada, which includes Canadian companies such as CAE, MDA Ltd., and L3Harris Technologies, collaborates with GA-ASI on the MQ-9B's development, delivery, and sustainment. This partnership is indicative of Canada's investment in leading-edge RPAS technologies and its commitment to the field.

GA-ASI has a long-standing history of working with Canadian industry, with nearly every system delivered containing Canadian components, such as sensors, propulsion equipment, and training/simulation systems and services.

The MQ-9B is noted for its long endurance, range, auto takeoff and landing capabilities, and the ability to operate in unsegregated airspace using GA-ASI's developed Detect and Avoid system.
