SHPE Participates in World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos as Part of Hispanic Delegation
LOS ANGELES, February 5, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) marked its presence at the 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum held in January 2024 in Davos, Switzerland. This global event gathered leaders from over 100 governments, major international organizations, the Forum’s Partners, civil society leaders, experts, youth representatives, social entrepreneurs, and media to discuss pressing global issues.
According to a recent press release form the organization, SHPE was represented by interim CEO Miguel Alemañy and Chief External Relations Officer Monique Herrera, who were invited by the We Are All Human Foundation to join the Hispanic Delegation. This delegation's mission is to amplify Hispanic voices and ensure their representation in critical discussions affecting their communities.
This year's forum, themed “Rebuilding Trust,” focused on addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in the global workforce, emphasizing transparency, consistency, and accountability as foundational elements of trust.
Alemañy and Herrera highlighted the importance of the event for SHPE, noting the unique opportunity it provided to engage directly with industry leaders from organizations like IBM, Microsoft, Bank of America, Accenture, Qualcomm, and JP Morgan Chase. “The access we had to industry decision-makers was remarkable,” said Herrera. “It was incredibly valuable to be able to have conversations with various corporate leaders in one place.”
The forum offered insights into the future of STEM employment, underscoring the ongoing importance of STEM careers, the need for pre-skilling employees, the critical role of middle management, and the consistent commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
Alemañy shared key takeaways from the event, stating, “We walked away with three truths: STEM careers are still on the rise and will be for the next 20, 30, 50 years. As the 5th largest economy in the world, Hispanics are both an economic powerhouse and workforce goldmine in the coming decades. And SHPE is uniquely positioned to answer the call of this supply and demand with our passionate and resilient members.”
Herrera added, “This experience was helpful on two levels. It reinforced that SHPE’s current programs are providing necessary pre-skill training, leadership development, and problem-solving for the next generation of STEM workers. It also helped us lay groundwork for new programs to address the challenges facing an evolving tech-centered world in the future.”
SHPE expressed gratitude towards its partners, including the We Are All Human Foundation, HACE, Latinas in TECH, Martin Cabrera with Cabrera Capital, Dr. Robert Rodriguez, and HACR, for their support in making this participation possible. The organization looks forward to continuing its efforts to elevate the influence and recognition of Hispanics in the years to come.
