ORLANDO, Fla., July 28, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - The International OCD Foundation (IOCDF) awarded reality television personality Scheana Shay the Illumination Award on July 27 for her advocacy in raising awareness about postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Shay, who stars on Bravo TV’s Vanderpump Rules, has publicly discussed her experiences with the condition following the birth of her daughter, Summer Moon, in April 2021.

The IOCDF Illumination Award recognizes media figures who portray OCD respectfully and accurately, or who work to challenge stereotypes and reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues. Rebecca Deusser, Executive Director of the IOCDF, praised Shay's efforts, stating, "Scheana’s courage to speak to the world about her struggles will help erase the stigma surrounding OCD and will reach millions of people who may find hope and healing through support."

Shay received the award during the IOCDF’s 29th Annual OCD Conference in Orlando, attended by her husband and over 2,300 members of the OCD community. In her acceptance speech, Shay emphasized the importance of addressing mental health issues openly: “Too often, we suffer in silence with only our worst fears for company, but getting a diagnosis and the proper treatment has made me feel hopeful again.”

Perinatal OCD, which can occur during pregnancy or postpartum, is characterized by intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors related to concerns for the baby's safety. The IOCDF provides resources and information on the diagnosis and treatment of this condition through its Perinatal Resource Center.
