VoltAero Partners with 'Power Up' Initiative for Electric Regional Air Mobility in Europe
EINDHOVEN, Netherlands, October 6, 2023 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - In a move to advance the realm of electric regional air mobility in Europe, VoltAero has joined the "Power Up" initiative. As developers and producers of the Cassio electric-hybrid aircraft family, VoltAero's expertise will be invaluable to the collective goal of the "Power Up" consortium.
The recent signing of the Power Up initiative’s memorandum of understanding (MoU) involves 18 partners. Among their aims is to establish test flights centered around the Netherlands, which would inform operational procedures and shape the passenger experience on electric aircraft for inter-regional air transportation.
This initiative has garnered support from numerous aviation and mobility organizations. These include Dutch airports such as Eindhoven Airport, Groningen Airport Eelde, Lelystad Airport, Maastricht Aachen Airport, and Rotterdam The Hague Airport. Also onboard are KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the Dutch Railways, the Netherlands Aerospace Center, and various consultancies.
Jean Botti, VoltAero’s CEO and Chief Technology Officer, remarked on the MoU signing event in Eindhoven, “The Power Up initiative is an excellent opportunity to show how Cassio and other e-airplanes offer the solution to introducing a new era of efficient air mobility with low-carbon emissions and reduced noise.” He further added, “As we progress toward Cassio’s production and service introduction, we are proud to partner with the Power Up initiative in pioneering sustainable aviation.”
The Cassio aircraft family, designed by VoltAero, promises benefits not just for commercial operators in the region, but also for air taxi/charter companies, private owners, and utility-category services like cargo, postal delivery, and medical evacuations. A standout feature of the Cassio is VoltAero's patented electric-hybrid propulsion system. For journeys under 150 km, the Cassio can function entirely on electric power, utilizing its internal combustion engine as a range extender for recharging its batteries mid-flight. This hybrid element also acts as a backup, ensuring optimal safety.
In terms of production, VoltAero plans to first introduce the Cassio 330, a four/five-seater aircraft with a combined electric-hybrid propulsion power of 330 kilowatts. Following this will be the six-seat Cassio 480 and the 10/12-seat Cassio 600, with 480 and 600 kilowatts of power respectively.
