Discover Appoints Kelly Welsh as Interim Chief Legal Officer and Head of Corporate Affairs

RIVERWOODS, Ill., November 7, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) — Discover Financial Services, has announced Kelly Welsh as its interim Chief Legal Officer, General Counsel, and Head of Corporate and Public Affairs. Welsh will join the Discover Executive Management Committee in his new role, succeeding Hope Mehlman, who will leave Discover at the end of November.

"Kelly brings an outstanding record of service, expertise, and achievement and will be a key member of Discover’s executive management team as we move closer to our merger with Capital One," said Michael Shepherd, Discover’s Interim Chief Executive Officer and President.

Welsh’s career spans more than 35 years in leadership roles within both the financial and governmental sectors. His background includes positions as General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Commerce and as Executive Vice President, General Counsel, and management committee member at Northern Trust and Ameritech. He also served as Corporation Counsel of the City of Chicago and was a Partner at Mayer Brown. Welsh has previously held board roles for Bank of the West and BancWest Holdings Inc.

Mehlman, who served in her role for two years, was praised by Shepherd for her contributions during her time at Discover. “I am grateful to Hope for her leadership over the last two years. She has made significant contributions at a crucial time, helping steer the company through several significant achievements,” he said.

A long-standing business figure in Chicago, Welsh is active in the community and currently serves on multiple civic boards, including Navy Pier Inc., P33 Chicago, Kids First Chicago, and the Civic Consulting Alliance. He is a former President of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago.
