DRESDEN, Germany, May 8, 2024 (VSNewsNetwork.com) - SpiNNcloud Systems has announced the commercial release of SpiNNaker2, a state-of-the-art neuromorphic supercomputer platform, ahead of ISC High Performance 2024. This new platform builds on the pioneering work of Steve Furber, known for his role in developing the original ARM and SpiNNaker1 architectures.
SpiNNaker2 is designed to simulate neural networks with high efficiency and low power consumption, utilizing a multitude of low-power processors to manage complex AI and other computational tasks. Sandia National Laboratories, Technical University of München, and Universität Göttingen are among the initial institutions to leverage this technology, which has its roots in the European Union-funded Human Brain Project.
Fred Rothganger from Sandia National Labs highlighted the capabilities of the new system. "Brain-like computation requires programmable dynamics, event-based communication, and extreme scale,” Rothganger said. "SpiNNaker2 is the most flexible neural supercomputer architecture available today. At Sandia, we are excited to build applications on this amazing system."
The technical framework of SpiNNaker2 includes a server board fitted with 48 chips, each consisting of a 152-core ARM-based mesh. These chips are equipped with various accelerators designed to enhance the performance of neuromorphic, hybrid, and mainstream AI model computations. The system’s hybrid capabilities allow it to merge practical machine learning algorithms with the energy efficiency of event-based operation and the reliability of rule-based layers.
SpiNNaker2 distinguishes itself from traditional GPU solutions by offering a more versatile and cost-effective approach to processing, utilizing asynchronous low-power units that enhance energy efficiency and communication.
Hector Gonzalez, co-founder and co-CEO of SpiNNcloud Systems, expressed his vision for the platform. “Our vision is to pioneer the future of artificial intelligence through brain-inspired supercomputer technology, and to create systems that are not only powerful but also transparent and explainable,” Gonzalez stated. "We’re building the most advanced brain-like supercomputing platform on the market, which positions us as the market leader in hybrid AI HPC. And it enables us to drive the development of reliable, efficient hybrid AI systems, opening up entirely new markets in next-generation defense, drug discovery, quantum emulation, smart city applications and more."
SpiNNaker2 will initially be available as a cloud platform solution, with full production systems expected to ship in the first half of 2025. For more information or to pre-order the SpiNNaker2 system, visit SpiNNcloud's website.
Attendees of ISC High Performance 2024 are invited to visit SpiNNcloud’s booth L19 during the conference.
